Congratulations to Bonnie Coffey for being named President of the Association of Health Information Outsourcing Services! Here's the news release that was issued regarding her new role:

Association of Health Information Outsourcing Services Names New President

BOSTON, Mass., September 12, 2007 — The Association of Health Information Outsourcing Services (AHIOS) has named Bonnie J. Coffey as president of the organization. In her new role, Coffey will spearhead the organization’s mission: to strengthen and enhance the health information management outsourcing industry and promote excellence in the handling and dissemination of confidential patient information.

“Bonnie Coffey is a veteran of the industry and a powerful advocate for the organization. We feel extremely privileged that she will bring her breadth of knowledge and expertise to the presidency,” said G. Michael Belleghi, executive vice president of AHIOS. “She has been a long-standing charter member of AHIOS, so it is a natural progression for her to take on this vital role.”

For more than a decade, AHIOS has striven to increase awareness of the value, importance and complexity of the outsourcing industry’s services and helped to establish standards of excellence in the release of medical information. One of the most critical components of the organization’s mission is to pursue fair and equitable treatment of the outsourcing industry through legislative, regulatory and legal processes. This will be one of Coffey’s key responsibilities.

Coffey is president and chief executive officer of CM Information Specialists (formerly CopyMed Inc.), which she founded in 1986. CM Information Specialists provides outsourcing services in release of medical information and temporary help and consulting to health information management departments. In 2002, Coffey founded Attain Document Services, which provides assistance in getting records of any type, digitizing, transmitting and storing records for its customer base. Today, over 250 customers receive record assistance from Coffey’s companies.

Coffey has also been instrumental in the creation of the Certified Release of Information Specialist designation, earned by individuals who have demonstrated their competence in the release and security of protected health information. An active member in the American and Minnesota Health Information Management Associations, she currently serves on the Legal Resources Committee and the Vendor Alliance Committee of the latter organization. With a degree in education from Moorhead State University, Coffey is an avid educator and provides learning opportunities for organizations interested in understanding the complexities of medical information.

“I am extremely honored to be named president and will dedicate myself to furthering our goal of ensuring that healthcare organizations have cost-effective resources for outsourcing their health information management functions,” said Coffey. “Our pledge remains to provide those organizations with fiscal relief and access to highly-skilled specialists who have the industry’s most advanced training and tools at their disposal for safeguarding one of healthcare’s most precious and complex resources — confidential patient information.”

Coffey succeeds Richard C. Logan, MBA, RHIA, a 30-year veteran of the industry and co-founder of AHIOS. Logan is CEO and president of Medical Records Associates, Inc., a company he founded in 1986 to provide health information consulting and management services, including ROI processing. Today, his company services more than 90 clients. He will continue to take an active part in supporting AHIOS’s goals.
